According to Roman Catholic theology and Catechism, the Virgin Mary, "having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory."[1] This means that Mary was transported into Heaven with her body and soul united. The feast day recognizing Mary's passage into Heaven is celebrated as The Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary by Roman Catholics. This doctrine was dogmatically and infallibly defined by Pope Pius XII on 1 November 1950 in his Apostolic Constitution Munificentissimus Deus. The Assumption of Mary into heaven is also taught by the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Oriental and Coptic Orthodox Churches , w it is known as the Dormition of the Theotokos. In those denominations that observe it, the Assumption is commonly celebrated on August 15. This beautiful painted wood panel is all that remains of a Spanish Colonial chapel Alter. It was professionally cleaned and embellished with gold leaf; the original wood frame was left as is. For the last 200 years itâe(tm)s been on a nuns personal Alter behind convent walls. It is on consignment for auction from one of the convents we work with in South America . It is 6.5 inches long, and 4.5 inches wide. The wood is in excellent condition and the paint is stable. T is a reserve on the piece due to the cost of the restoration. We have never seen a piece as beautiful and detailed as this retablo, in this size. Good luck bidding! Sellers: Delight buyers.
