Please do not bid on this chest if you need shipping outside of the USA . EBay rules forbid the shipping of anything containing ivory outside the USA . My uncle has asked me to auction this ivory inlaid Spanish Colonial wood chest that had been given to him by my 96 year old Mom, when she moved into an assisted care facility recently. All these items have been in our family for several generations and have come to my mother by inheritance; they have never been offered for sale or auction. This chest belonged to Mom's aunt who lived in Mexico and passed away about 80 years ago. The inlays are all in natural legal African elephant Ivory , brought over on one of the Manila-Acapulco Galleons, more than 200 years ago. The Manila-Acapulco Galleon trade began in 1565. The trade served as the fundamental income-generating business for Spanish colonists in Manila , Mexico , Cuba and Peru . A total of 110 Manila Galleons set sail in the 250 years of the Manila-Acapulco galleon trade (1565 to 1815). This chest dates from the 18 th century. The hinges, the lock and the key have original design elements, and are in good working order. The Asian style hand-carved pedestal legs are typical of those found on Manila chests from this period. The chest is 25 inches long, 12 inches wide and 8 inches tall; it weighs 12 pounds. The wood is sound all around, and the ivory is intricately hand carved as you may see in the pictures below. The Holy Family appears on the lid, surrounded by Angels along all four sides of the chest. This chest would have carried silver and gold embroidered vestments of a Catholic Bishop, according to family oral history; possibly his shoes, gloves, or Bishops Mitre. Good luck bidding!
