This is one of the few chests that Mom inherited 80 years ago from her aunt in Mexico , that does not have a religious theme to the design. The reason is that the chest was used to store âÂeÂoehard liquorâÂeÂ, discreetly and safely under lock and key. In part to prevent slaves from stealing it, but also because hard-liquor kept in the home, was considered a vice by the Catholic Church at the time. This chest dates from between 1800-1825 and it shows signs that it may have been broken into at one time, because t is a two inch square piece of wood that has been replaced behind the lock facia. When Mom inherited it, the chest already had this old wood âÂeÂoepatchâÂeÂ, and it adds, rather than detracts from its appearance. T is a lot of carved African elephant ivory used throughout the designs; it naturally was all aquired legally. Because of the ivory, we are not permitted to offer international shipping by EBay rules. The winning bidder must take delivery of the chest inside the USA . As to the condition of the chest, t are no unpleasant surprises. Everything on it works as it should. The bottles inside are props, and NOT part of the auction. The winning bidder needs to provide his, or her own bottles. The wood is cedar and the inlays are ivory and jungle hard-woods from the Philippines, a former Spanish Colony w these pieces originally came from 200+ years ago. The chest is 15 inches long, by 10 inches tall and it is 8 inches wide. Good luck bidding! Sellers: Get your own map of past buyers. Fast. Simple.
