Spanish Colonial Mexican Two Handled Oval Bowl

Presented for your consideration is a fine heavy hand raised silver bowl of excellent quality with a beautiful patina which imparts an incomparably rich and eloquent texture. This shallow oval bowl most likely used for serving vegetables is 1.125" (2.85cm) in depth and is supported on four solid silver balls. A pair of solid silver twisted rope handles adds elegance to an otherwise understated piece. Measuring 10.314" (26.2 cm) from handle to handle, 2.874" (7.3 cm) high and 5.866" (14.9 cm) wide, it is made of high quality silver of .9305 fineness which is greater than sterling.

On the surface of the bowl t are four hallmarks. These are the BTON mark of the chief assayer Cayetano Buitron (1823- 1844), small "o" over "M" hallmark representing Mexico City, eagle tax mark, and owner's mark of Martinez. On the back of the bowl t is an assayers zigzag burilada which was etched into the surface to remove small pieces of silver to test for quality. Other than a couple of small fissures in the rim and a very small dent on the side of the bowl this piece is in remarkably great condition.
