Mom has asked me to auction off fathers ivory inlaid Spanish Colonial Gun Powder chest. All these items have been in our family for several generations and have come to her by inheritance; they have never been offered for sale or auction. This chest belonged to Mom's uncle who lived in Mexico and passed away about 80 years ago. The inlays are all natural (not man made), and they include legal elephant Ivory, brought over on one of the Manila-Acapulco Galleons, more than 200 years ago. The Manila-Acapulco Galleon trade began in 1565. The trade served as the fundamental income-generating business for Spanish colonists in Manila , Mexico, Cuba and Peru . A total of 110 Manila Galleons set sail in the 250 years of the Manila-Acapulco galleon trade (1565 to 1815). This chest dates from the 19 th century and all the hinges and the lock have been restored and are in good working order. The chest is 12.5 inches long, 7.5 inches wide and 6.5 inches tall. The wood is sound all around, and and the ivory is beautifully carved. The walls are very thick (more than 1/2 inch) and this was so the chest could handle the gun powder and lead that was stored in it at one time. T is a gentleman's hunting scene on the front and the top. This is avery rare piece, and we have never seen another like it on Ebay.
