As Sister Teresa is in poor health, she has decided to part with some of her paintings from the convnets own collection done more than 5 years ago by her. Unlike her newer paintings, these pieces had been framed and stretched, but we removed the canvas from the frame i n order to be able to more easily bring these priceless paintings safely into the U.S. We had the privilege, two years ago of meeting Sister Teresa; a cloistered nun in Cusco, Peru who is an artist and reproduces the paintings in her monastery. On occassion, she is commissioned through her Mother Superior to paint Saints or particular religious themes. She has been doing this work as one of her contributions to her Sisters to help with the upkeep of the monastery building. Sister Teresa does not want a lot of publicity or fame, but has signed this rare early work titled, OUR LADY OF BETHLEHEM. Baby Jesus is in the arms of Mother Mary, as Saint Joseph guides this 6 person group on their journey. The three Saints in the group were the motivation of many Catholic Missionaries who set out to preach the word of God in the New World; Saint Thomas Aquinas, Saint Dominic and Saint Francis of Assisi . Many Convents found today in South America, California and the South Western United States were founded by nuns and monks from these three Religiouse Orders. The devotion to Our Lady of Bethlehem dates back to the 15th century; when conquistadors, navigators and sailors would come before her after every voyage to the New World ,to seek her intercession and to offer thanksgiving for their successes and safety. The painting will look stunning inside a hand carved wood gold-leaf frame. The canvas size is 21.5 by 16.5 inches and the facial expressions on the figures are beautiful . It was done in 2002 by Sister Teresa and has always hung inside the convent. It is signed by her. Good luck bidding!
