Original, authentic signature of General, U.S. Congressman, and Massachusetts Governor N.P. Banks Banks, for better or worse, was one of the better known Generals to come out of the Civil War and although he achieved few particular successes he was given important commands by President Lincoln primarily because of his political acumen. Lincoln did come to the conclusion that he had made a mistake by giving Banks the responsibility of the lower Mississippi. Born in Waltham, Mass., Banks had talent and as Speaker of the House, U.S. did much good. In the Civil War he served in the East until being transferred to the Department of the Gulf in December of 1862. He was presented the Thanks of Congress 28 Jan. 1864 "for the skill, courage, and endurance which compelled the surrender of Port Hudson and thus removed the last obstruction to the free navigation of the Mississippi River." Unlike some other political Generals Banks served in the field until the end of the war. Signature, maybe from an album page, is dated 22 Oct. 1873 and measures 2.5 in. x 4 in. With reputable COA.
