A Fine and Rare Antique American Violin George S. Hathaway, Rockford, Illinois, c.1923 READY to PLAY 's a real sweetheart of a AMERICAN fiddle. It was made by George Simeon Hathaway, in Rockford, Illinois, 1923. � He is an obscure maker..not � listed in Wenberg. � From the quality of his work, I can speculate that this was not the only violin he made...it looks to be the work of a fine craftsman... I have been able to gather a few facts about his life...and I'm sure more could be learned by searching census records. � He was born c. 1884. � He was married to Oliver Nash. � This violin was made in 1923... Five years after he made this violin, on August 2, 1928, he and Olive had their first son..George S. Hathaway, II., in Winnebago county, Illinois.... It is hand signed internally Geo. S. HathawayRockford, Illinois, 1923. (On the back plate under the f hole, and, � on the the top plate ) � see pics. This violin has a great pattern. The back length is short 13 3/4" or 350mm...the bouts are generous....It is a Guarneri type pattern...I love it's husky, but compact design. � A beautifully and carefully made violin in fine, ready to play condition. Handsome, model. Neat, compact body, with short corners, well balanced, with a striking outline. Low arching on the top... STUNNING f holes. slightly askew... The back and sides are of beautifully � figured maple? One piece. Nice... It is fully lined and has four corner blocks. Both linings and blocks are of spruce. All work inside and out is carefully and patiently executed. It has a nice fitted and carved bass bar. � Nicely inlaid saddle. Purfling is inlaid, three ply, well done. The corners are neatly shaped. The varnish is 100 percent original...a dark reddish brown...... but is in very good shape with only a few minor dents and dings. Just one short saddle crack bass side. now solid and tight. NO SOUND POST OR BASS BAR CRACKS!! Peg box looks healthy. .Pegs are original ebony that fit well and turn smoothly and hold... Tailpiece is vintage... hollowed out model, ebony...It has been fitted with a brand new Sacconi tailgut. It has a new fine tuner, and a new ebony endpin, as well. Strings are new, Pirastro Tonicas. The violin has been fitted with a new old stock flamey bridge, and, a new quality sound post that is properly fitted. T is nothing left to do but play. Great chance to get a genuine hand made AMERICAN fiddle.:P The violin is full size. Length of back: 13 3/4" � or � 350 mm. Lower bout: 8 3/8" � or � 212 mm. String length: 325mm. TONE: Deep, dark, rich...powerful.... strong, articulate with a nice clean edge....Even across the strings...cutting, and brilliant..,� NOT HARSH.... Quick � response. ..Full, dark bass.. midrange..mellow, smooth... plenty of warmth with brilliance through the upper registers... Excellent projection and volume.
