A Fine and Rare Antique American Violin George S. Hathaway, Rockford, Illinois, c.1923 READY to PLAY 's a real sweetheart of a AMERICAN fiddle. It was made by George Simeon Hathaway, in Rockford, Illinois, 1923. � He is an obscure maker..not � listed in Wenberg. � From the quality of his work, I can speculate that this was not the only violin he made...it looks to be the work of a fine craftsman... I have been able to gather a few facts about his life...and I'm sure more could be learned by searching census records. � He was born c. 1884. � He was married to Oliver Nash. � This violin was made in 1923... Five years after he made this violin, on August 2, 1928, he and Olive had their first son..George S. Hathaway, II., in Winnebago county, Illinois.... It is hand signed internally Geo. S. HathawayRockford, Illinois, 1923. (On the back plate under the f hole, and, � on the the top plate ) � see pics. This violin has a great pattern. The back length is short 13 3/4" or 350mm...the bouts are generous....It is a Guarneri type pattern...I love it's husky, but compact design. � A beautifully and carefully made violin in fine, ready to play condition.
