A special Navajo wedding basket (although these are called wedding baskets, they are also used for curing ceremonies). This is a large, older one and definitely used, with wear from use and of remants of the offerings still add to the fibers, especially on the bottom. And, a past owner's name is written on the bottom of the basket. I'm quite sure that this isn't a collector's name but an original owner's. I once had a Pueblo pot that had several different names written on the underside of the pot. I asked a friend from a local Pueblo about this and he verified that it's a way of making sure that the pot went home with the person who brought it - like my grandmother's casserole dish. He said the pot was sometimes gifted then a new name would be written on the bottom. The basket is slightly dished, it's 13" wide x 4 1/4" deep. The basket is in very good old condition with only the noted add stuff. A great piece of Native American and cultural history. Feel free to email any questions and thank you for looking!
