Extraordinary, possibly unique, Civil War period carte de visite photograph taken by A. F. Smith of Columbus, Ohio, of a spotted or pinto pony executing his special trick of stepping upon a trapezoidal raised wooden platform with one foreleg while his other foreleg is extended even higher with its hoof firmly planted upon the surface of a diagonal wooden projection. Effortlessly guiding the girthed and bridled pony in the background is his bearded owner, nattily dressed in a slouch hat and vest with hanging watch chain. Photographed outdoors in an apparently somewhat muddy open lot, most likely at the present location of the Ohio State Fairgrounds (w many of the traveling circuses and carnivals passing through Columbus are known to have parked their wagons, pitched their tents, and performed for the townspeople and city folk), image is in overall excellent condition, save for the extreme edge of the mount w one-sixteenth of an inch has been trimmed along the entire periphery adjacent to the outside decorative gilt line (absolutely not affecting the albumen paper and actually quite negligible, mentioned only for the purpose of complete accuracy). A really interesting and fascinating circa 1860s CdV of what may be the original “One-Trick Pony.” CONDITIONS & TERMS of SALE - Please READ CAREFULLY: (1) In compliance with eBay’s new read more
