This is a spectacular antique folk art hooked rug runner that was found recently in New England. The piece measures 30 1/2 in. by 118 in. (2 ft. 5 1/2 in. x 9 ft. 10 in.) and was likely completed ca. 1880 - certainly in the late 19th century. As you can see from the images, this runner was once part of an incredibly large, room-sized hooked carpet - it's almost hard to imagine the original immense rug of which this runner was just 1/4 or a 1/5 of the whole!! The rug has a vibrant, variegated cranberry-colored ground with a bold array of green and tan vinery centering on a beautiful pink rose. The construction is of wool hooked into a burlap foundation. Overall, the carpet is in very good condition; as the piece was part of a larger whole, it has been expertly edged by cranberry-colored cloth tape. And the underside of the rug shows that a number of smaller repairs have been made; this type of repair is to be expected of an antique hooked rug, and these repairs are barely noticeable on the top of the carpet. All of the repairs were professionally completed by the well-known Rug Lady Restoration Services (Stephanie Janssen of Halifax, Nova Scotia). I found this hooked runner at an incredible estate sale at an old farm in the mid-coast Maine area - the family that owned the property and holding the sale had owned this farm since the mid-19th century!
