I envy the lucky winner that moment when they receive the box containing this beautiful quilt, because this is the kind of quilt we all want: Glorious fabrics, great workmanship, pristine condition. All three come together in a sparkling fabric concoction from the mid to late 19th century. This rare mariner's compass dazzles with its expert craftsmanship and astute fabric placement. It has everything that the difficult pattern requires: precise piecing, sharp compass points, and use of contrast to create depth within the individual compasses. The compass blocks are set on point, and the quiltmaker used a delightful array of tiny prints on white ground to set off the compasses. The setting fabric is a vibrant red paisley, and the sashing is white with a tiny blue figure. The backing fabric, a bountiful red floral, will take your breath away it is so beautiful. The backing is tightly rolled over to the front by hand to create the binding. The hand quilting is done at 6-7 spi in a large crosshatch pattern. The quilt is large, measuring 95 by 91 inches. Condition: Mint, except for some fading of one of the blue fabrics in four blocks. This can be seen in the 8th picture. There is also slight, and I mean slight, fading of the middle section where it was apparently hung and exposed to light. I did not notice this in person, only in the photos. The winner will be delighted with the overall condition. It is crisp, bright with absolutely no wear. Please email with any questions. I know that the winner will love this quilt, so much so that I guarantee a full refund if not satisfied, although buyer must return within seven days and pay for return shipping. Buyer to pay actual shipping plus insurance if desired. I accept paypal payments. Thanks for looking!
An ebayer asked if there was any thinning material. Absolutely none. All the fabrics are very strong. I just got the quilt out a little while ago in response to someone's question, and I want to stress that any overall fading that exists is so minor as to not be noticeable in person. I put that in the listing when I saw the pictures, but it is really not an issue. There is some fading of one particular blue fabric, but there is no obvious demarcation where one part of the quilt was exposed to light and another not. Hope that helps.
