Tile Tea Trivet

GRAZING DEER

Minton China Works
Stoke on Trent

Staffordshire England

c 1880

This stunning transferware tile is a wonderful piece of folk art transferware! The tile was originally designed for use architecturally, probably as part of a fireplace surround or backsplash. It was later framed with simple chrome or metal, with four little bun feet, to be used as a tea stand or hot plate trivet. The framed tile measures 6" square.

The tile is transfer printed in a rich black. It is imaginatively decorated with a striking image of deer (including an 8 point buck )grazing and resting in a field. The image was derived from a gorgeous copperplate engraving. The tile is part of the Animal Series designed by William Wise , a artist and designer employed in the late 19th century by Mintons China Works. It is marked on the back with Minton's back stamp and a globe. It dates to the 1880's.

The tile is in great condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. A few utensil scratches on the front, and edge wear on the underside, consistent with age and prior use. The metal frame has some discoloration also. Condition is overall quite fine, and as expected for a tea stand which has seen generations of use. An absolutely spectacular piece, an outstanding example of the Victorian love of nature. The frame makes the tile particularly suitable for display, or it can be put to use as a tea stand. This sturdy piece of functional art is a great addition to any collection of transferware or art tiles. We have also listed a variety of unique transferawares and early ceramics depicting animals. We are always happy to combine postage on multiple purchases. Please send us an email with any questions or if you would like to see additional photos.
