This spectacular Pa. family schoolgirl sampler has the largest, most impressive visual format of any sampler I have offered in a long time.... with the best, most captivating folk art imagery that is guaranteed to turn heads from across a large room or show. This folk artistry is animated with an almost 3-dimensional appeal by the large scale format (26x24) ,which makes it worthy to be a mantle piece! To furthur give an idea of the generous proportions and visual impact, the fanciful Adam and Eve,serpent, and breathtaking Tree of Life scene is almost as large as some samplers at appx. 8x10! Beneath this dazzling Garden of Eden an expansive, solidly stitched lawn area creates additional visual interest with geometric layering in varying shades of green; the grassy area coming alive with 7 sheep (4 in repose) watched over by the most charming shepherd and shepherdess in striking period dress. The shepherd's red coat is exceptional, and his spotted sheepdog at attention is endearing. The sampler has Quaker 8-pointed stars,a myriad of floral sprigs, butterflies, and a poetic verse coupled with an inscription;"On the tree of Life eternal,Child let all thy hopes be stayed,Which alone for ever vernal,Bears a leaf that ne'er shall fade;Harriet Whittington Work aged ten years 1844". The fact that it is the quintessance of schoolgirl folk art is quite evident,as this example stands out among all the rest, destined for those discerning collectors who covet breathtaking visual that will demand immediate attention. This dazzling visual feast combines with a reserve far below wholesale to make this an exceptional find;but to put it over the top,the previous owner(from whom I acquired it in a trade) had this schoolgirl showpiece professionally museum mounted (dated on back) to the tune of $450....including acid free fabric backing, air spacing between the glass and sampler, UV glass for long term preservation and display, and family ephemera showscased including a printed fraktur, early lithograph of Schuykill,Pa, and schoolgirl writings. This one will surely prove to be a worthy, eye catching attention getter in the most advanced collection!(7 DAY AUCTION CLOSING WED. NOT MON)
