(This large and spectacular New England schoolgirl sampler(19x21) comes with the rare addition of a descendant's framed letter from the early 1900s with full provenance on the family and samplermaker. The descendant recently confirmed that the samplermaker was born in 1797,and the parents married in 1787,clarifying information in the family letter from her father Edmund Longley.) This breathtaking New England example from the Longley family, showcases a lower panel with striking visual imagery which includes a captivating 3-story house flanked by luminous, solidly stitched lawns, and fanciful trees filled with a flock of birds trimmed in black....distinctive motifs found traditionally on early Middlesex County examples. But adding to this picturesque part of the presentation, the samplermaker worked a rare and unusual inscription, that is showcased in a delicate meandering cartouche;"ELIZABETH LONGLEY'S PROPERTY 1809"!I have not had another in my 25 years of collecting with an inscription worded in such a way.....how charming that the talented schoolgirl seemed so possessive about her needlework! An outstanding double, inner sawtooth cartouche with yellow silk hues frames the inner format, and a classic arcaded ,New England dianthus flower border surrounds the entire piece. Samplermaker Elizabeth Longley was bo rn April 27,1797 in SHIRLEY,MIDDLESEX COUNTY,MASS. to parents JOSEPH LONGLEY and MOLLY PRATT;who were married 1n 1787,and the sampler according to the letter of provenance was passed on to her sisterSusan when she died in Leominster,Mass. in 1855.The original family settler to America,William Longley, came from England in the 1630s!!!The sampler is praiseworthy and exudes the quintessance of early New England schoolgirl embroidery.Conserved on acid free board ,the sampler is in extremely fine condition with only minor inperfections to the linen, and no loss to the needlework or staining. The verse is a favorite for Massachusetts schoolgirls; HOW BLEST THE MAID WHOM CIRC'LING YEARS IMPROVE HER GOD THE OBJECT OF HER WARMEST LOVE WHOSE USEFUL HOURS SUCCESSIVE AS THEY GLIDE THE BOOK,THE NEEDLE,AND THE PEN DIVIDE Advanced New England sampler collectors and historians will prize this memorable sampler. The visual impact will turn heads from a distance, but the family letter of provence is a rare and important inclusion.(Conserved on acid free in a wonderful antique reeded frame, retaining its original wooden boards on the reverse.
