This spectacular silkwork schoolgirl sampler(16x14) is for those advanced collectors who seek out visual impact pieces that are sure to turn heads!! An impressive folk art presentation, the 1820s gem exudes a 3 dimensional quality, with imagery that is dazzling throughout the entire linen ground. Showcasing the finest of schoolgirl artistry, the sampler features as the central focus an outstanding 3-story stone house with architectural details including smoking chimneys, paned windows, attic windows, checkered front steps,a pillared entry, and more......the house standing atop an unusual layered lawn ,stitched to perfection in striated horizontal lines. The expansive lawn itself is a visual focal point filled with animal whimsy.....a mother swan with 2 babies,5 sheep, and a wonderful bearded goat! The samplermaker "ELIZA DELL " stands with her mother just to the left of the house;while her father, the shepherd, poses on the right with his staff.... his sheepdog chasing a diminutive rabbit up the hill. The entire scene is so animated that it is sure to come to life each time it catches the eye! Above the house as well light blue clouds float in an unusual elongated ,octagonal sky ;and on either side stunning shade trees stretch vertically skyward with tropical birds in their branches.
Eliza finished her sampler at "9 Years" ,and as was the tradition with so many schoolgirls of that period, later created a "vanity sampler" by removing the last 3 digits of her completion date;disguising her age relative to potential suitors. The sampler is in very fine condition with only minor imperfections to the linen that pall against in light of the amazing needlework.....and has excellent contrast and resolution and vibrancy. A truly magical format that Eliza has brought to life with her needle, the 1820s sampler is laid on acid free board in a molded frame, and boasts a below wholesale reserve! (A buy it now offer is always welcome before competitive bidding)
