Samplermaker Harriet Mary Everts was born about 1815 in Salisbury Township,Litchfield County,Connecticut to parents Daniel Everts(Evarts) and Mary Ann Wightman.....the Everts well established t from the latter 1700s Her large and impressive schoolgirl sampler(20x21) is the quintessance of American schoolgirl embroidery! Visually impacting with exceptional silkwork and overall format,it features the typical Connecticut schoolgirl image of a multi-storied house with sideways view.In the book by Steve and Carol Huber"How To Compare And Value Samplers"(pg 87),another similar example is pictured in equally sterling condition with a value of $5000-$6000! Harriet's traditional Connecticut house has a yellow silk facade with elongated deep green windows,and is flanked by 2 of the most captivating,stylized poplar trees I have seen on a sampler....the entire pictorial scene a pastoral homestead sitting elegantly atop a horizontal grassy area. Harriet's sampler includes her Ct. teacher Lydia Miller ("L.Miller") who was born just after the turn of the century in Hartford Co,Connecticut. This talented instructress was surely responsible for the choice of such a popular verse, made famous by the renowned Scottish poet Robert Burns.
