Small quarto (14x18cm). [4], 57 (recte 59),[ 2] leaves. Early 20th century flexible crocodile (?) leather (scuffed, hinges partly broken). One double leaf loose (due to the thread, not the paper). White paste on two leafes (probably to mask an old collector's stamp), old paper with rubber stamp pasted on back of title, ink inscirption on back of title. Partly lightly dampstained. One folding map (Moscowia) slightly crumpled. Apart from the described defects, a nice copy on good, unpressed paper. Very rare French cosmography with fascinating maps (of America, among others - see scans for some impressions). The first part, describing the world, is largely written in French rhymes and includes many woodcut illustrations, most of them astronomical. The second part is an atlas. I could locate copies in Vienna, London, Paris, Wolfenbüttel and Munich - that's it. The last copy I found in auction records was sold in 1954 for the princely amount of DM 510.- - at the time the price of a fine copy of Munster's 1555 cosmography, which fetches EUR 14.000 today. Of course it is difficult to assess the book's price today. I feel that my reserve price is quite low - but then, what seller wouldn't? Just judge for yourself. The book suffers a bit from the unsympathetic binding - but on the other hand, the binding would make me less scrupulous to have the other flaws remedied by a good bookbinder. T is, however, a slightly larger number of copies available in libraries: 5 in the US (according to NUC) and one in Nottingham. T might be others, of course, but these are all I manage to trace through KVK and my university library.
