This is a really beautiful specimen with great crystal formations. This specimen comes with the original envelope which has written on it the following information: "SPINELL MgO AD O3 MONROE ORANGE CO NY" This specimen would have been packed into storage by Mr Lowry about 1921. The size is 3 inches by 2 1/4 at its most distant points and weighs 150 grams. Buyer to pay 5.00 s/h/i in the US, intl will be around $18.00. Thanks for taking the time to view my auction. This item is from the estate of the late Lancaster Lowry, noted mineralogist, rock-hound, and chemist from Mount Rainier Maryland. Mr. Lowry served in the USMC during WW1 and was later in the band. (I believe he was also in the Washington Redskins band for a time!) After the war he traveled extensively across the US and Canada gathering specimens for his collection. He was a member of the DC Mineralogical Society and the DC Lapidary Society, as well as MITHRAS and the Ancient Mystic Order of Samaritans. During WW2 he served as an air-raid warden and continued to do so during the cold war, when he became interested in radiological monitoring. He worked at the Metallurgical and Testing Division of the US Naval Gun Factory at the Washington Navy Yard from about 1920-1950 until retirement, and expanded his collection of rocks and minerals all along.
