Antique 19th C. Chinese Richly Embroidered Round Textile Huge Dragon
Round antique Chinese textile. The design is spectacular and the workmanship magnificent. Huge ferocious dragon in center done in the finest gold couching, amidst spiral work done in the finest satin stitch, in shades of blue. Bats fly all along the outer border. There are symbols worked into the embroidery as well. Swastika-like symbols. Interlocking circles and interlocking squares. Every square inch is covered with needlework. Backing is pale blue silk with Chinese characters written in ink. This is certainly 19th century. Circa 1850. Probably taken from a medallion on an antique robe and then made into a pillow cover back around the early part of the last century. Medallion is about 11" in diameter. Condition is exceptional, no soiling, no tears. The fragile silk in the back is starting to detach from the front, that's all, and I doubt anybody cares about that.
