Offered is a very rare piece of early Richmond Silver, part of a small collection I am selling this week. Captain William Richardson is a storied figure both in the annals of Virginia silversmiths and in early Richmond history. Born in 1757, Richardson was working in company with his brother George by 1784 and probably earlier. T is a picture of four salt cellars made by him for Patrick Henry in Cutten's book Silversmiths of Virginia. He was elected Captain of the Richmond Light Infantry Blues in 1798. During the War Scare of 1807, his company was ordered to Norfolk. Richardson served as the Mayor of the City of Richmond in 1801 and in 1807. He died in June of 1809 and was buried in Richmond with military honors. Richardson's work is highly prized by collectors of Virginia silver; I have only had one other piece in my career, a worn Serving Spoon. This is a heavy Sauce Ladle measuring seven and a half inches long. I say again that it is heavy- it is made of heavy gauge silver. T are a few small dents to the bowl, but no breaks or cracks, nor any bends to the handle. The back of the handle bears Richardson's characteristic mark- W.R. It also bears the stamp of an Eagle, an appropriate Federal Period device- all the more so considering Richardson's military status. Judging by the style of the handle end and considering Richardson's career, I would date this piece to c. 1800 give or take five years. Please see the rest of the interesting silver I have up this week, including other pieces of early Richmond silver.
