Sign up for my email newsletters by adding my eBay Store to your Favorites An older purple milk bottle from Springfield,Ohio....THE HOME DAIRY AND STANDARD ICE CREAM CO. in circle slug plate...ONE PINT at shoulder....B inside pronounced circle on bottom......early semi automatic machine made.....round.....purple....Excellent Condition with no chips, cracks or damage. A dug bottle with some light inside haze. This is a fairly scarce milk bottle from around 1910-1915. I guarantee this bottle is from Springfield,Ohio. The beautiful amethyst or purple color of this glass is a result of the presence of manganese in the glass, which was a decolorizer to turn the glass clear. Most of the manganese used in glass factories came from Germany, so when WW1 broke out in 1914, it became much harder to obtain manganese. Other oxide decolorizers were then used instead, so most bottles made after 1918 or so donâe(tm)t turn amethyst. Glass that contains manganese, when exposed to ultraviolet rays of the sun or other sources of UV rays, causes the glass to turn amethyst. Some of my amethyst
