St. Isaac's Cathedral was once the main church of St. Petersburg and the Russian Empire's largest church. It was built in 1818-58 by French-born architect Auguste Montferrand. This painting is made on the shell. Painting is lacquered several times to protect the delicate artwork. The box is molded of papier-mache to the shell. The pa inting is made by artist Averina in the village of Fedoskino, one of four Russian lacquer painting centers. The artist used very fine brushes made of squirrel hair to paint the fine details with a paint made of egg-based tempera. This paint is made in small quantities and has very vivid colors.
