The glass factory at St. Louis, France created much beautiful glass in the form of paperweights and other elegant glass. This piece would have been made in the middle to late 1800's. For those who collect paperweights and who may have the book Glass Paperweights of the Bergstrom-Mahler Museum. 1989 edition, you will find on page 60 an illustration of a paperweight with an applied cobalt snake on opaline glass. The snake in that piece is identical in formation to the one on this vase. It was hard to catch the color of the vase but it is an opaque opaline with a glaze. The top has gilt around the outward formed fluted edge and t is gilt at the bottom of the stem above which is the snake and also on the foot of the vase. At the base t are two lines of gilt, some of which has worn, and this is true of the top of the vase, some areas showing wear. The cobalt snake is beautifully curled about the vase and the gilt scales show from the top of the head and all the way up on the back to the tail. I took a close-up to show the gilt tongue is on the glass. The vase is a bit over 10" at the height of the top rim and the base is 4 1/8th" in diameter. It hollow down to w the base joins the area with the applied snake. And the base is hollow up to that point as well. I am assuming the two pieces were blown separately and then joined. T is no damage in the form of dings, chips, scratches, etc. Thank you for viewing this unusual piece. Please email with any comments or questions.
