Thenew sterling silver bezel on this antique alabaster sculpture was restored by my mother many years ago. This small-scale sculpture is a badge worn by nuns of certain religious orders in Mexico as part of their dress. Sculptured and painted badges originated in Mexico in response to religious reforms introduced by the archbishop Francisco Manso y Zúñiga. The sculpture is carved from a single Alabaster stone that weighs 3.5 ounces, and it has no cracks. The length of the pendant is 3 inches, and is an entirely unique and beautiful piece of Church history.
