A Staffordshire pottery jug, dating to c.1840. Relief moulded in the form of a tree trunk, with two children, sleeping beneath the branches. This appears to based on the "Babes in the Wood" story, a favourite in pantomime ! It also has the original, shell shaped, pewter lid and mount. Measuring 6" high to the top of the lid's thumbpiece. T is a chip at the lid's hinge and another, smaller, near the spout. Both of these are to the interior and can't be seen with the lid closed. Both hinge pins also have short hairlines of about 1/2" but these are old and faint. An interesting early Victorian jug.
