Porcelain Mantle Figurine with King Charles Spaniels and Tree Trunk with Moss from the 1830-50 period (condition as found) WELCOME ITEM DETAILS: A pair of porcelain spaniels with featd reddish-brown coats and gilded padlock collars from the second quarter of the nineteenth century. The base is hollow and accented with a single gold band. The dogs are made of fine white translucent porcelain and exhibit no crazing or staining. This is not a flat back figurine. The base and tree are also porcelain, but much thicker than the dogs. T is bocage on the tree that represents moss. All of the gold is burnished and more than 98% intact and original. T are two vent holes perforated by hand in the base that enter up into each dog. The muzzles and eyes of each dog are accented with black enameling. The patches of moss on the tree are colored with red, orange, yellowish-green. The moss is made with fine clay shavings and t is even a ring of moss around the base of the tree. The dogs on this figurine are among the smaller sizes found for King Charles spaniels and each stands about 2 3/4 inches tall above the base. In fact, these same dogs may have also been sold on separate smaller bases, as well. T are no overall molded seams or mold lines and so each dog and the tree were individually press molded and then added to the base. And as such, the spaniels also display more detailed molded coat and faces than typically found on porcelain dog figurines. T are no makers names, numbers or other identifying marks and so I do not know who made this figurine. The base matches one shown in Rice (2002:100) from about 1840 and which also has moss bocage but no makers marks. Three Dudson porcelain spaniels with fine red feathering and strongly molded details are the closest to the figurine listed (see Rice 2002:91). Other factories that made porcelain spaniels include Derby, Grainger Lee & Co. (Worcester), Minton, Davenport, Copeland & Garrett, Samuel Alcock and many other potteries in Staffordshire, Swansea. Yorkshire and Leeds between 1820 and 1870. Finally, this mantle piece is not without some condition declarations, however the two spaniels are perfect and are without any chips, wear or damage. In fact, the only damage evident from the front of the figurine is a fine hairline on the base running between the two dogs and the one missing tree limb end (see full condition statement given below). And so if you are looking for an nice, rather uncommon antique Staffordshire spaniel mantle figurine with wonderful coloring and burnished gilding that will capture attention in any setting, do take a look at all the photos of this porcelain example from the 1830 to 1850 period. SIZE: This figurine stands 5 1/8 inches tall and the base is 4 1/8 long by 2 inches wide w it bows out in the front center. Each spaniel is 2 3/4 tall when the base is not included. The base adds about 3/4 inches to the total height of the figurine. CONDITION: This figurine has been broken at one time and the pieces simply glued back together. The glue is still evident along some of the break lines and may be cleaned off carefully. The dogs have no damage or chips and are just as perfect as the day they were decorated some 160 years ago. The base was broken in half running between the dogs and two fragments of the back side of the base were detached but have been glued back in place (see photos). The only base chip missing is a small 1/4 inch spall w the two larger fragments meet along the edge. The tree has three breaks that have been glued back together and one limb break that is not rejoined (this limb fragment is missing). T are no professional repairs, overpainting, or restoration and the broken pieces have simply been rejoined with glue. And the only damage evident from the front is the base break and the missing tree limb. So if this is more than acceptable, then do place a bid while the figurine is still available.
