This is an antique Staffordshire figural animal, a bisque hen on nest measuring 4 inches long. It is skillfully hand-painted and dates to the mid to late 1800s, unmarked as is usually the case with these early animal figures. The exterior has a matte finish, while the interior is glazed. Condition is excellent - no chips, cracks, hairlines, stains, or repairs. The basket or box is a pleasing yellow. Several eggs peak out from under the chicken as she sits on her nest - a charming addition to a period kitchen or figural grouping.
