The Standard Sewing Machine Company was located in Cleveland Ohio and began life in the late 1800s. This machine was probably made after 1910 possibly in the early 1920s. In 1924 the company ran into financial difficulties and by 1934 was consumed by the Singer Sewing Machine Company. This machine is significant to a collector because it represents a factory modified, factory correct very early electric machine which was originally designed as a treadle. (And could still work as one). Also of some interest and again more so from a collector's viewpoint, the motor is a Standard, this being of interest as many original motors have not survived to today and many early electrics were "after market made" with a corresponding after market motor. When I took ownership of this machine the base had deteriorated considerably so I re-created it as exactly as I could using solid walnut instead of the original laminate. The top is original, has a key and fits snugly and securely to the new base. This machine, a Standard Rotary Shuttle does sew and you will see in my photographs that the stitch width may be varied from tight to quite wide.
