This old Stangl covered box was crafted in Trenton, New Jersey by Stangl Pottery, and the pattern is "Magnolia." Both pieces are in seemingly unused, mint condition! The famous Stangl oval backstamp is found on the bottom of each piece, along with the signed initials of the artist who decorated it (see photo 2 below). This covered box is difficult to find, especially in mint condition like this! Stangl achieved this style of decoration by "carving" a sharp edge into the red clay body to outline the pattern, and the piece was fired for the first time. It was then handpainted, covered in a clear glaze and fired a second time. As both pieces show the handpainting brush strokes, we know that they were made prior to 1953, when machine spraying began to be used. Given how few items in today's world are crafted by hand, you can appreciate the amount of labor with which Stangl pieces were produced, and perhaps a major reason why Stangl closed soon after its founder, John Martin Stangl, died. Keep in mind that modern Stangl was neither handpainted nor carved. This box isw absolutely perfect, devoid of any damage or crazing, and seemingly has never been used. PLEASE ignore any camera flashes . This is an opportunity to add a rarely-seen covered box to your Stangl or Magnolia collection at an excellent price. You will be very pleased! read more
