Rare Stangl Fulper Fayence Persian Yellow Demitasse Coffee Set. Dinnerware pattern #901 was introduced in 1924 as the first set of solid-color dinnerware in America. This set bears a nearly intact STANGL POTTERY black and gold "beanpot" label, so must date from 1930. It was always referred to in our family as the Kiddie Tea Set. The identification of it as the Demitasse Coffee Set was kindly provided by Diana E. Bullock, co-director of the Hill-Fulper-Stangl Potteries Museum, Flemington, NJ, when we corresponded about this set in 2003.
The Demitasse Coffee Set consists of the Individual Teapot, Individual Sugar, Individual Creamer, and the Demitasse Tray. The Demitasse Tray is evidently quite rare, though as far as the single pieces go, the Coffee Pot/Teapot is valued higher. It must be extremely rare for all four pieces to survive as an intact set. (To give you an idea of the scale, the Tray is 8 1/2" across and the Creamer is 2 1/2" tall.) Condition is Mint, meaning, as I always do, that it is just as it came from the kiln. It does have some issues however, and I am meticulous in listing them. The glaze is not an example of Stangl's best, having many extremely tiny bubbles, tiny bumpy spots, and all over crazing. (Almost all Persian Yellow of this age does.) Some may consider crazing to be subsequent damage, but if it's not something that can be prevented, I don't. The cover of the sugar bowl is marred with blackened spots, which is either soot or ash from the firing, or a chemical impurity in the glaze, or even some reaction between multiple glazes. Oh well, I hope for this set to go to some collector who wants a fine old example of something that seldom, if ever, comes on the market; I don't expect it to go to the Getty Museum. T is absolutely no post production damage at all, except that the beanpot label is missing it's left "ear" (the handle.) Please email Seller with any questions or to request the original high resolution photographs before bidding. Insurance is recommended for any breakable item but is not required on items under $100.00. If insurance is declined, shipping is at your own risk; no refunds will be made. That said, I pack my Stangl ware extremely well. As the busy season for my business approaches, my spare time becomes non-existent and I may only be able to ship on my Wednesday (and sometimes Tuesday) day/s off. As always, if the actual packed piece exceeds my estimated weight I pay the extra shipping cost. And if the weight is less than my estimate, because I combine shipping or find a smaller box, then I refund the difference. Never a Reserve! Seller accepts PayPal, Money Orders, Cashier's Checks and personal checks. Items will not be shipped before personal checks clear my bank. I DO combine pieces together to save on shipping if the auctions end within a few days of each other. I appreciate an email letting me know you are bidding on other items. If you collect Stangl pottery be sure to bookmark my Seller's page to check out the many wonderful pieces of Stangl dinnerware and art pottery I will be listing from a major private collection that has been in storage since 1982. Thank you for looking at my auction!
