Stanley #4 Bench Plane Presented for your woodworking pleasure is a nice very early Stanley #4 bench plane. It has three patent dates (Type 7--ca. 1898). Retains about 20% of its original japan finish. The rosewood tote and knob are solid and are in good working order. Botton of sole is in great shape and the mouth is small (characteristics that are desirable both in handplanes and girlfriends). I sharpened this little jewel and then honed it until I could shave arm hairs. The results are some of the fluffiest shavings you will ever see. This plane rocks! This plane is for users and collectors alike. It is hard to find the early planes in good condition like this one. Users will be thrilled because this is a great little plane. Early model Stanley planes are highly desirable because they were well made. The casting is solid and the sole is dead flat. The adjuster has very little backlash and this plane is a joy to use. You can spend your time and money looking around, but you will not find anything to beat this plane. Look at the shavings! If you are a woodworker, you need this plane. It will take your work to a whole new level. Even if you have a planer, you need a plane to shave and trim. Did you ever make a drawer that was tight in the carcass? Use this plane to shave the sides for a perfect fit. The Stanley #4 is a pretty common plane, but the early versions are getting harder to find. You can buy one that is *barn fresh* or you can spend alot of money for a LN or you can get this little piece of American history. I say use your savings to buy some nice cabinet wood and go to town. I started out as a woodworker, turned into a metal worker, and now I am a store owner. My goal is to help out my woodworking buddies. Please enjoy your trip around the store. I specialize in plane cutters and refurbished tools. All of my work is focused toward the active woodworker. Collector are welcome to browse and may find items that are appropriate as crossovers do exist. If you are a woodworker, however, this is your place. Nothing beats time in the shop making shavings.
