This is a vintage Stanley Bailey #4 smooth plane, manufacturing during the time of WWII. It's a good user plane, but t are a few features that would discourage collectors. THE GOOD: This plane has a lot of mass, which is good for a smoother and typical of the WWII planes. T are no cracks or pitting on the castings. The front knob and tote, which have the black paint, are in very good shape. They are tight with no cracks or damage besides a few chips. The lever cap is in good condition and has most of it's nickel plating. T is a fore/aft adjustment screw on the frog. Not all planes of this era have that (I'm selling another right now which doesn't). T is a lot of life left in the s/w-era blade, which is very sharp. THE NOT-SO-GOOD: Someone started to drill a hole in the toe to hang the plane, but must have thought better of it and stopped. Or, it's the original owner's way of identifying it. I don't know. Either way, it doesn't affect the plane's use. T is some chipping around the mouth near the right side. T is a chip in front of and behind the blade in the same area. The blade isn't original - it's a s/w-era blade. This doesn't affect it's use, of course. The frog is also not original. It's from a later period w the lateral adjuster has a twist at the end to form the tab. Doesn't affect the plane's use. Overall, it's a good user plane that's clean and ready to go to work. The chips around the mouth may deter this from being a dedicated smoother, but it's still a nice plane to use.
