STANLEY NO 4 EXTRA THIN RULE, 2 FOOT, 2 FOLD, DIFFERENTI have a Stanley # 4, 2 foot, 2 fold Carpenters rule that is advertised as being "Extra Thin". It has an arch joint and brass hinges and tips. The width is 1 1/2" and it is made of Boxwood. It has 8ths and 16ths of inch graduations. This rule also has octagonal scales on it . And finally, and most important it is of an extra thin construction. This rule is marked with the rule model number and the Stanley logo. The logo is indicative of that used from 1858 to 1917. Apparently production stopped on this rule in 1917. However , I believe this rule was made before 1902 because of the absence of 10ths scales on it. The #4 is unique among Stanley rules in that the plates for the rule joint are mounted on, instead of being set into, the surface of the wood. This was necessary due to the extra thinness of the wood. When one lokks at the rule the hinge plates stand proud of the wood legs. Rule is in nice shape.. Both edge pins are present . No splits or cracks in this rule and the graduations and scales are all very legible and clear. The only blemish is that a former owner "F.C. WILSON" stamped his name on the front next to the arch joint. A nice example of this scarce rule that is frequently found with broken legs because they were thinner and tfore, flimsier than the normal rule. read more
