Greetings fellow Trekkies, Trekkers and Sci-Fi fans! Up for bids is one Screen Accurate, Very Cool, Loud and Clear, Fully Functioning, Star Trek -The Original Series - Bluetooth Communicator! How many times have you wished you had one of these! This Comm will pair with any cell phone that is Bluetooth capable! Once paired you can stick your cell in your pocket then send, receive and make calls using your Comm just like Kirk and the boys! Imagine the response you'll get pulling this bad boy out at the next convention! If you don't want the long-winded version skip down to the Red text below. As a kid I was always fascinated with Sci-fi props and the Communicator from Star Trek was my favorite, right above the Phaser and the Commlock from Space 1999:^) I had every model and toy that came along, the Marco Ent., the Playmates, however they always fell short as I wanted them to look and function exactly like the ones from the show. Then came the Master Replicas Comms, of which this one is based, and alas we finally had pretty much the most Screen accurate Comm to date. While this Comm is not really an MR it is nearly identical and is made in China, as were the MRs, with the same molds. In fact, you can interchange most parts between the them. The differences are mostly cosmetic. The plastic has a more shiny appearance and the metal parts might look more like chrome, the MR appears more like brushed aluminum. They are physically identical but were unfortunately were still just a toy:^( Working with a company in China, I got some electronics that, with some serious mods, I could make fit inside it and after about 12 hours of cutting hacking and soldering I turned it on and it came to life! Its performance exceeded my expectations. It was very important to me that all of the Comms original buttons and lights worked and had a specific function, I didn't want any quarky holes or other buttons that the original hero did not have sticking out! The Button on the back serves to turn it on/off, accept and reject calls whilst the two buttons on the control panel, under the grill, turn the volume up and down. Pressing Repeatedly turns it up and down in steps. It is very loud. The LED's also all work and have a function: The Blue LED, which is very bright, indicates pairing, the Red indicates Battery status, the Green indicates Call in progress and also flashes whenever a button is pressed. The Blue LED will flash about every 4 seconds while paired, the Red will remain lit when charging or flash every 3 seconds when the battery is low and remain lit 3 seconds when powered down. The Green LED remains lit when a call is in progress. The Blue and Red LED's will alternately flash when in pairing mode, that is when you are initiating it with your phone. These LED's look VERY cool shining through the grill when it is closed! The Battery is a rechargeable Li Poly type and provides 8 to 10 hours of talk time and 400 hours of standby. Takes up to 3 hours to charge. The Bluetooth Specs are Version 1.2 Class 2, 10 meters. Your cell phone needs to be within 10 meters of the Comm to function properly. It will come with a charging cable that plugs either into a cigarette lighter, or USB port. To charge you only have to remove the 4 screws from the back, gently pull out the little charging cable and plug it in. Though it was hard, I was able to keep the Grill opening sound, so when you flip it open you will hear the familiar sequence of chirps, just like in the show! In one of the pictures you will notice a slit on its back. Behind this is a 1-1/2 in, 4 ohm speaker and it is far louder than any cell phone in "Speaker" mode! I can use it in my car and hear just fine. The mic is at the top under the grill to the right of the Moire disc, and no the Moire does not spin. It was impossible to fit the motor in with the Bluetooth electronics, and the motor noise would likely have been a nuisance.
