Speculated to Berlin's heraldic animal, the bear, be attributed to Albrecht I "the bear", conqueror and founder of the Mark Brandenburg. Clearly the Bear shows up continuously since 1280 in the seal or crest. Exact details were not then written down or lost, and therefore the return of the name of the animal or to Albrecht the Bear questionable, is the prevailing opinion in the research from a Slavic origin. The first recorded seal with bear is dated 22 March 1280. It is on a Gildebrief the Berlin furriers and provides two armored bears is a plate holder, which are turned away with a raised paw each other and to look at but backwards. The seal bears the inscription "Sigillum burgensium de berlin sum" (I am the seal of the citizens of Berlin '). The raised paw is already here symbolize the independence of Berlin.
