State Seal Doorknob - Massachusetts c. 1890 Cast Iron Original Backplate is included!! This emblematic knob was made by Yale & Towne and likely used on government buildings. The seal features a standing warrior from the Algonquin Nation, with a bow in one hand and arrows in the other. There is a ribbon with the state motto, and above an arm wields an unsheathed sword. this may actually be the "Coat of Arms" for the state, as the seal has a different motto and is round. The ribbon reads, "Ense petiti placidam sub liberatate", Latin for "By the sword we seek peace, [but peace only] under liberty". The cast iron knob shows average wear, probably from oxidation. The dark gray color makes photography difficult. The knob is about 3" long by 2" wide, with a brass shank, and weighs 7.5 oz. The knob is secured to the normal sized spindle by a pin, and both the original pin and spindle are included. Also included is the original iron back-plate/escutcheon, with a brass thimble and a single keyhole. The plate is heavy iron, 7.5" long by 2.5" wide, with a single keyhole and 3 pierced elements, along with a scroll motif at either end. Weight of the whole set is just over 18 oz. PayPal only. Priority Mail only. More knobs and some very interesting builder's hardware pieces to follow, so "check seller's other items". Stay tuned.
