Stephen Smith is the inventor of the American roll top desk. This is a rare example of American Boston Empire furniture Ca. 1830. This desk is signed with a paper label in the centre knee-hole drawer, which is flanked by pedestals to either side with paneled hinged doors. Opening the doors reveals a unique configuration of drawers with original wood knobs. The opposite side has corresponding fake blind door panels; the sides have two panels divided by a center style. The desk is constructed of the finest figured mahogany available at the time and retains its original locks and hinges. The top has a cross-banded mahogany edge that surrounds a beautiful red leather top with delicate gilt tooling in keeping with the period, although not original.
