Rare stereo of General Custer and Colonel Ludlow on the Black Hills Expedition of 1874-1875. Identified as #847, "Our first Grizzly, killed by General Custer, from the series, "Stereographs of the Black Hills," by W.H. Illingworth. Published by Illingworth, 'East Seventh Street, St. Paul, Minn.' Shows huge grizzly bear with Custer brandishing his rifle over the trophy. Indian guide looks like he is holding a Sharp's rifle and others with fringed outfits and guns. Tent with man in the background. Period back lists all cards in the series. Tiny pinholes in each corner. Clear and spectacular image! Fantastic early West stereo, General Custer, hunting, bear, American Indian, guns, famous identified photographer. Oops, I meant Illingworth in the message answer. Lou Additional information for question: This stereograph has original albumen prints on original card back and obviously is #847,'Our first Grizzly, (k)illed by General Custer', which is checked in pencil on the reverse (per period custom.) It seems Illingworth used the 'Black Hills' card over a misprint on the bottom front- as this text with 'Hornet's Nest'- that barely shows, is definitely not listed as a card from the series. I believe this card was tfore of limited issue in the 55 card set. I am an author of a book on card photographs and tfore have a strong knowledge base. I am eliminating photographs from my collection. Lou
