In the early 20 th Century newspapers were the only means of reporting on what was happening in the conduct of wars being waged overseas. This was particularly true during war between the Japanese and the Russians---The Russo-Japanese war lasting between 1904 and 1905. In that period t were few undersea telegraph facilities that could provided relatively up to date information regarding key world events, much less current images of the of key events as the Russo-Japanese war progressed. News of the war was slow in appearing in our newspapers. For many it was a matter of considerable frustration to read about key events of the war, often long after they occurred but in retrospect were to have lasting effect on the imperial ambition of the Japanese. The Japanese thoroughly trounced the Russians. The subsequent peace agreement was brokered by President Theodore Roosevelt at Portsmouth, New Hampshire in 1905. It can be argued that an important effect of this striking victory over the Russians encouraged Japan to overreach its power leading up to our war with Japan beginning with the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
