Vintage Sterling Loring Andrews Repousse Gravy and Underplate, Estate Item Part of an estate collection found at an antique auction, this stunning sterling silver gravy boat with matching underplate features intricate repousse work of flowers and castle scenes that covers every part except the stem and a small oval on the underplate. Both gravy boat and underplate are marked on the bottom "STERLING ... 86." According to one source I found, Loring Andrews sold sterling silver items of the "highest quality" and was known for its striking repousse work. The same source suggested that other silversmiths (such as Kirk) made much of the work sold by Loring Andrews. In fact, the pattern on this tray looks virtually identical to a tray made by Kirk that I saw online. I found a few more photos of other Loring Andrews pieces, such as a punch bowl (16" in diameter) that sold for $9,200 at Cowan's February 2006 Decorative Arts auction. I also saw an 8" vase in this same pattern with castle motif that sold for $2,200 at an estate auction in Cincinnati conducted by Stuart Holman in 2005. The gravy boat is 5" high to the top of the handle and 8" from spout to handle; the underplate is an 8 7/8" x 5 5/8" oval. Together the set weighs about 16 oz. or 14.58 Troy oz. The set has an elegant style and is not engraved. In general, it is in very good condition with no dents or dings but shows its age in light marks from use on the underplate--it could also use more cleaning. Like the other pieces from this estate that we're also listing on eBay this week, this one would make a spectacular addition to any collection. Thanks for looking.
