is a beautiful example of English sterling silver from the turn of the 19th to the 20th century! This is a caster, or in one of my books, was also referred to as a "pepperette". Casters were used from the 17th century onward, and usually used to shake sugar or pepper on to foods. T are several hallmarks on the upper side of the lower piece, and on the inside lip of the shaker top. On one of the side panels of the bottom piece, t are three marks, side by side. They are: an upright anchor, which indicates Birmingham, England as the city of origin; a lion "passant", indicating sterling silver of 925 out of 1000 parts silver; and the small initial "b"in a shaped box which indicates the year of making as 1901. On the next panel to the left is a maker's mark. I can make out the last letter, which is an "A". However, the first initial has too much silver in it to decipher. The top piece has the lion and the "b". The top has beautiful reticulation, well done and smooth to the touch. T is an attached finial on the very top with a swirl design. The whole piece is in an octagonal shape. I would call the style very elegant and classic. As a matter of fact, this shape is very close to one shown in "Christie's Small Silver Tableware" book as being made in London in 1719. This piece has no dents. The top fits well to the bottom. It is just under nine inches tall, and is three inches wide at the bottom. It weighs eight ounces. It needs a good polishing (I did not attempt), and would make a wonderful addition to a collection of fine, English sterling! This piece is part of an estate of glorious silver items from Potomac, Maryland. I have recently relocated to the midwest from the east coast, and am selling my 30 year collection.
