A handsome, very heavy handmade sterling silver mint julep cup from the famous makers at Wakefield-Scearce Galleries of Shelbyville, Kentucky, inspired by a design made in Kentucky in the early 1800s. The bottom of the julep cup is engraved with a cartouche of a left facing American Eagle and the initials of the President of the United States 1963-1968 when this cup was made, LBJ, for Lyndon B. Johnson of Texas. The cup stands approximately 4.75" tall and is slightly over 3" wide at the top. It is marked on the bottom as Sterling, indicating the maker is Mark J. Scearce, Shelbyville, Kentucky. The design is very similar to the old Reed and Barton beaded-rim mint julep cups. The overall condition is excellent, but please note a very minor indentation (ding) at the bottom of the cup which I noticed when polishing it. This is one of four julep cups I am offering. This cup was awarded as a trophy from the prestigious Linville Golf Club in Linville, NC and is beautifully hand engraved Linville Golf Club, Senior Medalist 1970. If you do not care to show the engraved side, which is done beautifully, just turn it to the other side and display it with your other fine silver. Please note this is an semi-antique cup which has been lovingly and gently used on Kentucky Derby Day (always the first Sat. in May) for many years by our family -- the Mark and Willie Snow Ethridge Family of Louisville, Kentucky began the family tradition-- so it is not in brand new condition, but it is lovely and has no serious condition issues or repairs. 's our family julep recipe. We make it in batches because we always held a big Kentucky Derby celebration: MINT JULEPS Ingredient and Supplies you will need 2 1/2 ounces finest Kentucky Bourbon 1 T. Simple Syrup (See receipt below) Fresh Mint Crushed Ice Mint Julep Cup Fill a julep cup almost to the rim with crushed ice. Add 2 1/2 ounces of your favorite Kentucky Bourbon to the crushed ice, plus 1 Tablespoon of simple syrup. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint. Simple syrup: At least one day before the race, make a simple syrup by combining 2 cups sugar with two cups of water and bringing to a boil for about 5 minutes. Place 8-10 sprigs of fresh mint in the mixture and put in a covered container in the refrigerator to ferment overnight. Remove the wilted mint before serving the simple syrup. ENJOY!
