THIS IS STRAIGHT FROM MY GRANDMOTHER'S ESTATE. PURCHASED IN ONE OF ANTONIO PINEDA'S SILVER SHOPS IN MEXICO DECADES AGO. MY GRANDPARENTS LIVED IN MEXICO FOR 10 YEARS IN THE LATE 40'S - 50'S. THE PEN SET WAS A DISPLAY PIECE BEHIND THE COUNTER AND NOT FOR SALE BUT MY GRANDMOTHER KEPT GOING INTO THE STORE AND ASKING ABOUT THE PEN SET. EACH TIME THE RESPONSE WAS THE SAME THAT THE SET WAS NOT FOR SALE. T WERE MANY OTHER BEAUTIFUL THINGS THEY TRIED TO SELL HER BUT SHE WOULD NEVER PURCHASE A THING. NEVER A SALE FROM MY GRANDPARENTS AND THEY WERE ALWAYS CURTEOUS AND POLITE. ONE DAY SHE WORN THEM DOWN AND SAID OK AND SOLD IT TO MY GRANDMOTHER. THAT IS THE STORY MY GRANDMOTHER TOLD ME WHEN SHE GAVE THE SET TO ME. IT WAS BOUGHT FOR MY GRANDFATHER BUT IT MUST HAVE BEEN FOR MY GRANDMOTHER. IT WAS FULLY APPRAISED AS ORIGINAL ANTONIO PINEDA MERCHANDISE - TAXCO MEXICAN 925 STERLING SILVER. T ARE THREE (3) HALLMARKS - T IS AN LARGE HALLMARK OF AN EAGLE CLUTCHING CROSSED ARROWS ON EACH SIDE OF THE FRONT OF THE AZTEC WARRIOR'S HELMUT. ON THE BACK OF THE AZTEC SHIELD IS ALSO THE PINEDA HALLMARK AND DIFFERENT FROM THE HELMUT STAMPS. I TOOK PICTURES OF ALL 3 HALLMARKS . I HAD THE SET PROFESSIONALLY CLEANED AND POLISHED AND THE ENTIRE SET IS STERLING - EVERY PART OF IT!! STERLING : AZTEC WARRIOR, SPEAR, SHEILD, EACH PEN HOLDER, THE 4 LARGE HEAVY BALL FEET, AND THE ENGRAVABLE PLAQUE ON THE FRONT WHICH NEVER HAS BEEN MONOGRAMMED ARE ALL STERLING SILVER. TOTAL WIEGHT OF THE SILVER IS OVER 4LBS OR OVER 1,814 GRAMS JUST THE STERLING SILVER ONLY . THIS PIECE WIEGHS A TON. This entire set was hand wrought no machine made parts. No pens come with this set. The demensions are: 16" accross and 13" tall. The marble is in perfect condition with no gauges, no chips and no cracks and no repairs - just a few tiny flea bites which are inconsiquential to a piece like this. This set is perfect condition. T IS ABSOLUTELY NO OTHER PEN SET LIKE THIS ON EBAY! PERFECT FOR FATHER'S DAY! This pen set was hand wrought in Taxco, Mexico, circa 1940's, by world renowned silver artist , ANTONIO PINEDA (1919-). Maestro Pineda is an international award winning designer and artisan; and, one of two living members of the original "Taxco School". He is known for his bold modernist designs and exquisite execution. Antonio Pineda's art is highly regarded by serious collectors from around the world. HALLMARKS : "ANTONIO TAXCO (in crown), HECHO EN MEXICO, SILVER, 925, and the Eagle 17 assay mark". ANTONIO PINEDA and this hallmark (photo P-37) are shown on pages 137-141 of Bille Hougart's highly respected source book, The Little Book of Mexican Silver Trade and Hallmarks (2006 edition). According to Bille Hougart (page 9, Figure I-4b & c) the Eagle 17 assay mark on this set, is the more elaborate Eagle mark that was used from 1948 to circa 1955, helping to date this set as being made in the late 1940's to early 1950's.
