Franklin Mint States of the Union Series First Edition Sterling Silver Proof Set Offered at auction is a complete set of 50 sterling medals depicting each of the 50 states, arranged by their order of statehood. Each coin depicts a rendition of the state, including an image of what comes to mind when the we hear the name of the state, and the reverse depicts the state seal and the details of their statehood. Only 32,275 of these sets were made and many, like many other coins and medals minted in this era, experienced severe withdrawal from the collector market into the melting pots during the "great silver melts" of the late 1970s and 1980s. Each coin is 32 mm in diameter and made of 14 grams or .45 troy ounces of solid sterling silver. The set's overall low mintage, plus the effects of the silver melts, makes this one extremely collectable set, and an interesting addition to any bullion collection. All 50 of the coins fit into a custom designed folding portfolio measuring 10 3/8 by 10 3/8. The individual medals are in superb condition, and they look to be seldom handled but time has rendered some tarnish and toning on some of the medals. The details are sharp and true and the written descriptions are clearly readable. Each coin has a definite 'sterling' designation stamped into the blank area along the reeded edges. All totaled, the sterling weight of this set is 22.51 troy ounces. Undeniably, a valuable asset that should only grow in both value and rarity...but the pleasure of owning such a treasure would be immeasurable. There are a few of the medals from this same collection currently running on Ebay for $19.95 each ($19.95 X 50 = $997.50)... so this complete set is an absolute steal. Due to value, this item will be shipped via UPS with full insurance. The shipping cost is only an estimate and I always refund any overcharge once I know what my actual shipping costs will be. Please view the pictures carefully. I generally take my photographs outside in sunlight to accurately depict the colors and conditions of the items I am offering. If you see any discolorations or other anomalies that would indicate damage, it is either the sun, the clouds, the trees, or me. I try to fully and faithfully disclose any irregularities I find but I am far from perfect and some things may escape my detection. Also, when damage (no matter how minute) I try to make sure that it is clearly depicted in the photos. I believe that I have described the above auction offering accurately and in detail. The sterling that I am currently listing are not my property and as such, I am unable to make a 'deal' or entertain a 'Best Offer' scenario. They belong to a friend who is in the precious metals business. He has a warehouse that is stockpiled with sterling items that he has purchased over the last 28 years of business, including more than 100 different silver flatware sets. With the soaring price of silver, he had decided to send them all to the smelter to be melted down. Instead, I convinced him to let me try to offer them on Ebay so that they would not be destroyed. I know that there are silver lovers out there that wish to harken back to the days of genteel dining and gracious living. Besides, I have come to genuinely appreciate anything that is older than me and still survives. Due to recent complications with International bidders and shipping policies, I will only ship via Express Mail International with full insurance.
