Item: Souvenir Spoon Maker/Mark: A flag with a "H" inside of it (Watson & Newell). Watson & Newell Co. was from North Attleboro, Mass. was well known for sterling silver souvenir spoons. Style/Design: Etched in the bowl is the Fairview mansion of "William Jennings Bryan" of Lincoln Nebraska. Above the mansion it says "Fairview W.J.Bryan Residence" and below the mansion is says "Lincoln". The spoon handle is highly decorated with many items on both the front and back side. At the top of the spoon is the State Seal of a figure with a hammer and an avil, behind him is a train and mountains. The words "Equality Before The Law" are at the top of the spoon. Next going down the spoon is a bull, then "NEBRASKA", then a stalk of corn and other floral decoration. On the back of the spoon is a tepee, a canoe, tommy hawk (we think) and paddle and peace pipes. William Bryan (b. March 19, 1860, d. July 26, 1925) served 2 terms in Congress (1891-1895), was U.S. Secretary of State (1913-1915) and was a Democratic nominee for President in 1896, 1900 & 1908. He was also an opponent to Dawinism and participated in the highly publicized Scopes Trial (1925). Mr Bryan's Fairview residence is now a museum and is open for tours.
