For your consideration, an absolutely exquisite Victorian era Sterling Silver Wine Coaster or Caddy, with wonderful wood marquetry inlay in the center, from Wm. B. Durgin, an American Silver Maker. The Wm. B. Durgin Co. was in business from the 1850's till 1905, when it was purchased by Gorham. This little jewel is a great example of the fine silver and wood craftsman of that era. The detail on the sterling is simple but elegant, with a reeded edge, bordered by a lovely looping design using a three foil technique, that is continuous around the perimeter of this piece. The interior is so beautiful! The design is a 12 point pinwheel. The delicate detail is a testimonial to the amazing skill of the craftsman who created this on such a small scale. Crafted with at least 3 different types of wood, the three dimensional, fluid design, looks like it is moving as a pin wheel would, in the wind. The shading at the edge of each of the lines w the wedges of wood are joined, accents the beauty of the design. This American Made sterling wine coaster, measures 3 inches across at the silver edges, 2 3/4 inches across on the wood surface, and a sloping 1 inch deep. The dimensions of this piece further support my feeling that it is turn of the century, before the mass production of wine bottles and the increase of their size. They were still hand blown and smaller in their diameter, thus the smaller circumference of this wine coaster. T is one condition issue, although small. A small dark stain on the wood, about the size of a lentil bean, which shows in the photo. T are a couple of slight indentions in the wood that can be seen when you hold it just right in the light, not scratches w the wood is damaged but more of a marring from something heavy, I would guess. Considering the age of this wine caddy, it is in pretty darn good condition with no dings, dents or scratches to the sterling silver. It just needs a bit more polishing to get the last bit of shine on it. This thing was tarnished black when I got it. The hallmark is on the outside bottom rim and reads; "STERLING 21", with a cursive-script 'D' inside of an and elaborate rectangle with curlicue accents in a couple of places. T is a well worn piece of felt on the bottom to protect the surface that it is placed on. This is a throw back to a time when dinners were formal and everything was done with style and grace. From the linen table clothes, sterling silver serving pieces to the fine china and crystal, and meals were enjoyed at a leisurely pace. This is a wonderful example of the joint effort of a silversmith and a cabinet maker, that was common in those times, when every effort was made to produce a masterpiece on every level and by hand!! This is a little piece of functional art, and a treasure that will add a touch of elegance to any collection. Because this was purchased at an estate sale, it is considered used and tfore sold "As Is". I try to accurately photograph and describe all the items that I sell.
