This auction is for a tea spoon-sized sterling souvenir spoon measuring approximately 5-1/2 inches long. The spoon has a lot of detail on it, beginning with the bowl which features an embossed (produced by stamping cold silver blanks between dies with tremendous force - producing fine details and sharp edges) depiction of the "Senate House 1777 - Kingston, N.Y." Going up the handle are the words: "First Capitol" and then a statute of George Clinton - not to be confused with Gen. William Clinton the British General that ordered the complete distruction of the town in the Fall of 1777. He was to meet up with Gen. Burgoyne, who was coming down from Canada when he got his "you-know-what" handed to him at Saratoga. The inhabitants of the town fled to nearby Kingston Point and after the British left, they returned to re-build their city, including the Senate House depicted in the bowl. That house still exists today and can be seen in the photos. George Clinton (also no relationship to William Jefferson Clinton) was an American soldier and politician who was the first and longest serving Governor of New York. He was also the Vice President to both Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. Finally, the handle is topped with the Seal of New York. The back of the spoon is also quite detailed.
