Stevengraph of Elderly Tailor and Young Girl Large size 8" by 12" Stevengraph, beautifully woven subject of an elderly Tailor and a young girl. The weaving of fancy silk ribbons began in Coventry around 1700, and was a main industry t until 1860 when cheap foreign goods flooded the market. The Stevengraph trade name was coined by Thomas Stevens in about 1863 to describe his woven articles, and today that includes his silk pictures and portraits. Categories included portraits of historical figures, royalty and politicans. Also included were religious picture, pictures of exhibitions, castles, and buildings. All manner of sports subjects, horse and bicycle racing, boxing, etc. Another major weaver of silk pictures was Neyret Freres of France. He is best known for beautiful silk adaptions of paintings in black and white and shades of gray, with occasional accents of color. Initialed in the left corner NF, in the right corner signed D' AP.
