Up for auction is a stone depiction of a Nyoirin Kannon Bosatsu, clearly dated to the seventh year of the Kansei Era (1795), late-Edo Period.
Hand-sculpted in bold relief, with excellent lichen accumulation imparting to the stone a desirable green-tea hue, a notably good 18th-century Japanese depiction of Nyoirin Kannon Bosatsu. Of Kannon Bosatsu's 33 manifestations, Nyoirin Kannon is the most stylistically distinct, this deity being depicted invariably in the seated pose of royal ease. Uncommon.
